Teachers’ beliefs and behaviour in mixed and set mathematics classes

Sarah Lazzerini

For her Part 2 investigation Sarah explored whether there were any differences in teachers’ beliefs or priorities when teaching mathematics in mixed and set classes.

She found that teachers had mixed beliefs towards teaching mathematics. While some teachers felt their beliefs did not change regardless of the set or class context, some others held different beliefs towards different sets. Lesson observations also revealed discrepancies between teachers’ professed beliefs and their behaviour.
