What does a successful self-regulated learner look like?

Many studies discuss the importance of self-regulation for students, but it is left unclear what exactly good self-regulation looks like. Victoria’s case study compares what self-regulation looks like in both successful and under-achieving more-able students (three from Y7 and three from Y10). The attached document outlines her findings regarding:
(a) self-regulation strategies the two groups of students actually use (focused on the different elements of planning, monitoring and evaluating what they are doing) – noting that students tend to be given little scope to engage in planning strategies within lessons;
(b) how successful and under-achieving students perceive their work; and
(c) how these students understand the connection between homework and learning – which is important given the scope that homework could provide for developing self-regulation.
