Embedding oracy in the classroom
Jemma Thompson
Matthew Arnold School
Jemma was interested in how oracy skills could improve students’ discussions in the classroom.
Building on the research Oracy 21 (which has now set up School 21 – a school that has designed its entire curriculum around oracy), Jemma discussed with the Head of Oracy Programme from Didcot Girls Schools, who had had two-year experiences of embedding oracy into the curriculum as a whole-school approach.
The impacts of focusing on oracy in Jemma’s lessons were very positive. They included higher quality of students’ discussions and the subsequent writing task.
