Extended written explanations in science

Ruth examined how the quality of the texts students read can influence the understanding of complex concepts for students in Years 7, 10, and 12. Through deliberate expansion of the reading material available to students, she found that students developed the ability to produce more fluent and more logically-ordered explanations. She encourages teachers to curate a variety of resources, including the Internet, older high-quality textbooks, and student-collated explanations about concepts.
