Resilience and Growth Mindsets

In this inquiry, the teacher drew on the work of Carol Dweck and an Msc in Learning and Teaching that a former colleague in the school (Lucy Dasgupta) had undertaken into ways of promoting a growth mindset among mathematics students. In her inquiry. Tina and a small group of colleagues examined the oral feedback that they provided to their own students, finding that it was often full of ’empty’ praise. She reports on the strategies that they used to help break their own ingrained habits and make more use of approaches that could promote growth mindsets in students and help them stop viewing their work as good/bad; right/ wrong while recognising what they can do to improve.
